One of the more interesting things about being in the Middle East is experiencing the desert. Living in the desert plays an oversized role in the imagery of the Bible.  I had an experience the other day that illustrates that.

It is heating up here, and it is normally very dry. The wind blows, and it is like being in a giant air dyer. You lips and skin are parched. I was walking from one side of the base to another to meet someone. As I ws going along, sone clouds rolled in. There was no forecast for rain, and it's past the rainy season here anyway.

Suddenly, it began to rain. It wasn't a lot. Just big, fat drops plummeting from the sky. It wasn't enough to get me really wet, but I cannot describe how refreshing it was to feel that unexpected water hit the skin of my arms and legs, to wet my lips, and to smell the change in the air. Something literally changed in the atmosphere, and it refreshed my spirit.

Worship does that for us. I read this morning in Psalm 30:

11 You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.
You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,
12 that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!

There is refreshing in reading the word. Refreshing in singing God's praises. Refreshing in prayer. Refreshing in fellowship with God's family.

Maybe you've been in the desert and you know. Maybe you are in the desert right now. Seek that refreshing. It is rarely an overabundance, but it is always enough.

Like rain in the desert.
