What is freedom?
There was a famous study of children. They built a playground and placed a bunch of children in it. There were no defined boundaries to the playground. Rather than enjoying the entire playground, the children huddled in the middle. Then the researchers put a fence around the playground. They put the samne group of children in it an now the children were running aroung and using the entire playground. The boundaries gave them a sense of security.
Parents know this to be true. Children need boundaries. However, this is true of everyone. Think about the people around you. The most unhappy people are the ones with no "boundaries." They might say, "I am free", but they are not.
Jesus addresses this in Matthew. Everyone serves some master. Freedom is getting to choose our master.
Scripture tells us that true freedom is in obedience to God's commands. They are the "fence" within which we live full and abundant lives. And in case you want to say, "But we are free from the Law", remember that Jesus Himself gave us about 150 specific commands while He was on earth.
"To obey is better than sacrifice."
Christ has set us free...free from the chains of sin, and free from trying to earn my salvation. Now I am free to joyfully follow Him in obedience.
That is worship!
