In Athens, Paul shared the gospel with Jews and God-fearing Gentiles in the synagogue, with people in the marketplace, and with the Areopagus leaders and intellects. In every context, he connected with his listeners in ways that would be most relevant for them. He appealed to their religiosity, referred to their altar to an “unknown God,” and quoted a Stoic philosopher to lovingly present the gospel message with restraint, respect, and revelation. Paul provides a great example for us to look for points of agreement when trying to connect with people.
